Sokoban: what to know before playing

Sokoban gives you a focused activity to play in your browser. Push every crate onto a target. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Begin with the solo mode shown on the page. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Push two crates onto their targets in compact 7×7 rooms. The starting layouts can be solved; an unhelpful push may still trap a crate.

A focus for your next round

Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart. Notice the feedback after each input.

The purpose of your moves

Push every crate onto a target. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Take a moment to understand the current position.

Making your moves

  1. Move through empty floor.
  2. Push one crate into empty space.
  3. Never pull or push two at once.
  4. Undo a deadlock and continue.

The controls to know

Arrow keys or direction buttons. Use the control method described here for this activity. Check any mode label before starting.

Learn from a sample situation

A crate in a non-target corner cannot be recovered by pulling. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Choose a deliberate next step.

Check this before moving on

Consider the player’s access behind crates. Check the rule before repeating the action. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
