Learn your way around Slitherlink

Choose a round of Slitherlink and settle into its rules. Draw one closed loop whose edges match the count around every numbered cell. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Ten 4×4 loop puzzles with all cell clues shown.

Build familiarity through play

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Use the example to check your reasoning.

What you need to achieve

Draw one closed loop whose edges match the count around every numbered cell. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

The playing sequence

  1. Click an edge to draw, exclude or clear it.
  2. Count the four edges around each cell.
  3. Do not branch or form separate loops.
  4. Check puzzle verifies every clue and loop connectivity.

Your inputs

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Use the control method described here for this activity. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

Try this example

A 0 cell has no loop edge around it; a 3 has exactly three. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Look for the relevant detail.

Keep this in mind

Several small loops are invalid even if clues match. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
